Internet Forms, etc.

If the patron (including kids) never filled out a form then they have to fill one out.

If the patron (including kids) has a form on file, that will work for the time being.

Children no longer need a parent in the room because the filters are in place. So they aren’t going anywhere they shouldn’t be going.

Adults 17 and up are the ONLY ones that can asked to be unfiltered.

We ordered a new time management software that will limit the length of time someone is on the computer.

This software will take the place of the computer forms also… a patron has to click “I agree” before they can log on.

We have the software but have to wait for our tech people to walk JS and me through it.

UNBLOCKING A PUBLIC COMPUTER

Remember, when an adult asks for their computer to be unblocked, it is there RIGHT to request this. It does not mean they are viewing pornography. They could be researching a paper on witchcraft or ladies undergarments, which are legitimate AND legal sites.

Remember, we do not judge!

If you have a concern about this, please come and talk to me.

Filter Passwords

The filters have been live for more than a day! The public and circ names and passwords are at the circ desk in the unmarked drawer of the black box next to the phone. The passwords for the public computers will be changed periodically and you'll be notified when it does.

We will be purchasing winter clothes and school supplies with the donations.

THINGS ARE CHANGING!

Hi Everyone,

We have continued to shift collections and re-adjusted the Help Desk and moved some of the spinners from in front of the new book area to the paperback areas… all these changes have really opened up the space. Please listen for comments and let me know what you hear from patrons and what you think, too!

Tim and Dennis continue the wiring project and will be connecting us on Tuesday, while we are closed to the public.

Thanks to all staff who helped us rearrange, reorganize, move tables and chairs, etc. Note that all desk top areas that have fliers, bookmarks, etc. sitting on the counters, must have them placed into upright holders to eliminate some of the desk clutter. Please let Jody Studer know if we need additional holders.

We will be adding additional signage and moving the catalogs, as well. More on that soon. Lots of great changes coming!

Good morning everyone.
Yesterday we added a new feature to our Website called Tumblebooks. It is a Read along collection of books for kids from pre-school to teens. We think it is something everyone will like. Any patron with internet access can take advantage of this service. Simply go onto the library website and click on TumbleReadables , located prominently in the top center of the page. Readers may choose from a collection of New Books, Early Readers, YA/Teen to Shakespeare. As they say "a picture is worth a thousand words". Check it out for yourself and see how easy it is to use.

We will create a bookmark for our patrons to let them know about this great new service.
Thanks,

School Text Books

Hi Ladies,

School District 33-C has established a new reading program for grades K-4 this year. The reading text books that we have for those grades are no longer in use. They have implemented a new reading program called Story Town. Some of you may already be aware of this. This is an exciting new program that will have the text and work books available to the students on-line. We are presently working with the school to have this service available at the library for the students.

Also, District 92 has discontinued the math text books. We have packed them up in a box behind
Kathy and Julies desks. District 92 will be coming to collect them and replace them with new additions.

I will keep you posted about the new reading program and also when we acquire the new math books.
Thanks,
Kitty

CHANGING OF THE CD CASES

As you may (or may not) have noticed, we are putting the CD’s in skinnier cases. The new cases will be filed for the public as the others are. The CD will still be in the back room to be pulled at checkout.

Checkout at Library:
1. The plastic envelope containing the booklet (or copy of the album cover with note that booklet is missing) will be brought to the Circ desk. On the front of the envelope will be the Filing Label and the cover of the booklet will be showing. On the back of the insert is the barcode tab.

2. When the CD is pulled and put in the envelope for checkout the front of the CD with the actual barcode will face the back and show through the circle in the insert. (Our hope is that the patron will return them packaged the same way.)

3. The booklet is always kept in the envelope.

Checkin at Library:
This procedure should not change from our current practices.

Checkout for the Pick List:
1. The plastic envelope containing the booklet (or copy of the album cover with note that booklet is missing) will be pulled from the CD rack.

2. When the CD is pulled it will be put in a hard plastic blank holder (one of the old cases).

3. The booklet stays in the envelope here.

4. The plastic envelope is put in the box marked “CD’s out on Inter-Library Loan” by barcode number.

5. The CD is sent to the requesting library.

Return from ILL:
1. Check the “CD’s out on Inter-Library Loan” box. If the CD has had its packaging changed then it (and its booklet) should be in there.

Please remember to tell patrons that we have space limitations and that we prefer to accept donations during the first 2 weeks of August. If any patron asks to donate books before that date, please direct them to Adult Services so that arrangements can be made.

At this point, the basement is full and we can not store books in the meeting room until August due to programming.

Though we would like to, we can not continue to take boxes and boxes of books from everyone.
The staff meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 24 has been canceled.
Thanks.

We have over 70 teens interning at the library this summer! Due to this large number of volunteers, we do not have spots for any future applicants. If patrons ask about applying for the teen intern program, please let them know that we had many more applicants than anticipated, and then take down their name & phone number (do not have them fill out an application) & let them know that they will be contacted if we have any more volunteer opportunities this year. Why would someone want to join the Friends Group?

There are a lot of reasons.... check out the flyer on the white board!

A current Friend of the Library

If someone comes in who is already a Friend of the Library (you can tell ~ they have a "my friend" sticker on their library card) give them a raffle ticket to put in the coffee can on my desk. The drawing will take place at the end of the month.

The purple tickets are next to Jody S desk.

That's it! If you have any questions, please ask me.

How to become a Friend of the Library

When someone wants to sign-up as a member:
It's $5 for individual and $7 for family.

1. Have them fill out a membership form that is located on the corner of Jody S's desk. Staple the money to the form... if it's a check have them make it out to the Homer Library and put "friends" on the memo line. Put the check and form in the silver/black box on my desk.

2. Put a "My Friend" sticker on their card (don't cover the bar code) ~ located in a black and silver box on my desk.

3. Give the patron the stapled packet of "library bucks" ~ these can be used for fines or book sale. (in the black/silver box)

4. Give them a yellow "10 free copies" form ~ black/silver box

5. Give them one (1) raffle ticket; have them put their name and phone number on it and drop it in the can marked "friends" located at the circ desk.

If you have any questions, please ask me.

We will be holding a program "Are You Smarter Than a Librarian" on June 16th from 1 -3 p.m. This program is open to grades 3 through 8. We need to form teams, so they will need to sign up prior to June 16th. There are sign up sheets in the program log. They can sign up for (1) 30-minute session......1-1:30/1:30-2/2-2:30/2:30-3. If they want to sign up for more than 1 session, put their name down for 1 session. Any additional sessions, they should be listed on the waiting list. Let them know that if no one else signs up they can do more than one, but we need to give everyone a fair shot for at least 1 session. We are also looking for staff volunteers to play if you're working that day. It will be team play so no one person is on the spot.

25th Anniversary Book Lists

Hi everyone,

For the library's 25th anniversary, I am compiling lists of the staff's 25 favorite books. There will be three lists -- one for adults, teens, and children. Please let me know what your favorite books are! If you can email me your top 2 or 3 picks (for any age group) by Friday, April 4th, that would be excellent.

Thanks for your help!

ITEM HOLDS

LOCKING BATHROOM -- UPDATE !

CLOSING PROCEDURES/CHANGES – lock the bathrooms ½ hour before closing each day. Key can be requested from the Circulation Staff and will have to be monitored as such. The sign says “may” since a program may require they not be locked. Use your best judgment and coordinate with whoever is having any program so you are on the same page.

The bathrooms must be unlocked after closing because the cleaning person needs to get in them to clean. Thanks...

DTV Transition and the Coupon Program

For Patrons asking about the DTV Transition and the Coupon Program -- -

https://www.dtv2009.gov/ApplyCoupon.aspx

What is the digital television transition?
At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.
What is the TV Converter Box Coupon Program?
Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes.
A TV connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service does not require a TV converter box from this program.
Consumers have a variety of options. Options to explore include:
Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after Feb. 17, 2009, or
Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service, or
Purchase a television with a digital tuner.
Have more questions? Visit our FAQs for more information!
Not sure if you need a Converter Box? Click Next.

Sign-Up

A REMINDER----

Program sign-up is on Monday, January 14th. No one is to sign up patrons for any programs until that date. The book is not given to patrons, that preserves patron confidentiality. Staff will sign patrons up for any programs on or after the 14th.

Requests for Bookmobile Books

If a patron would like an item from the bookmobile collection, they are very welcome to have it.

Please check with bookmobile staff regarding the item first to make sure it is on board before sending patrons out to the bus.

We do not want to disappoint anyone if we can avoid it.

The bookmobile has limited space so many items are in storage at the garage and not actually available on the bus. We will be happy to bring requested items back to the library or put them on the bus for patron pick up.

Thanks.
