If you look around the library, you’ll notice that there are posters and bookmarks about House Bill 1727, Mandatory Internet Filters on All Public and School Library Computers. This is a bill that the Illinois State Senate is currently considering.
If this bill is passed, OUR library will have to place filters on our computers!
Currently, our library is NOT filtered. Our library believes that parents are the best means of preventing minors from accessing undesirable content in the library. This is why we have parents fill out a consent form and require parents to sit with youngsters in the computer room.
Please take a minute to look at both the posters AND bookmarks….they contain different information.
The bookmarks discuss why filters don’t work and that they are inflexible.
The posters discuss what may happen in public libraries if this bill is passed…. Notice that point three states “Given the requirements of HB 1727, your library may need to remove all public computers due to…” We are in no way saying this is what our library will do if HB 1727. It is something to consider as some libraries may go this route.
At my previous library, youth computers were filtered. An excellent example to discuss with patrons is the effects this will have on student homework. A project was assigned on trees and bushes. Students were blocked from all sites that contained the word bush!
