HOLDS CLARIFICATION

Patrons who belong to a library in PALS (Prairie Area Library System) may place a hold at ANY PALS library and choose the Pick-up Point as ANY PALS library. If an Item is not in the PALS system and the patron is not ours, then they do need to make a request from their home library.

If this isn't clear then talk to me!

Gingerbread House Program

The Gingerbread House program held Monday, December 10th was a great success! Thanks to Kathy for all of her help. There are extra recipe and template forms in the kitchen if anyone would like one and lots of left over bread!

Monday, December 10, 2007

Sign-up

Remember, each person that registers for an event needs to be placed on a new line. Our meeting room only holds a certain amount of people. When we place a limit on an event, we (as in all of us -- circ, ref, ys, and others) go by the line number --- nobody has time to look at the entire list and count 2 people for this line, 4 people for this line.

So right way...
1. Sandy Smith
2. John Smith
3. Sara Smith

Wrong way...
1. Sandy, John, and Sara Smith.

FASFA

FASFA will not be available in paper. Students and parents should file online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Paper information on filing online, protecting your identity while filing online, repaying debt and more are located on the "College Center" table.

Information on College Illinois is located near the bulletin board.

so workflows and ibistro are down, what do you do?

You can still help your patron!!!!

If they have a title but no author.... If they're looking for a certain subject....

Go to the SWAN catalog and look it up!
http://swan.mls.lib.il.us/

There's no way to know if we own the book, but you can show them where it would be located if we did own it!

No need to memorize the URL, just google "swan catalog."

You can also do this if a patron is wondering if the book is located at Orland.

Just another way to be the best library worker you can be!!!!

:)

Video Reading System

We received a donation from a patron. It is located next to the microfiche reader.
It is a full color video reading system that provides clear magnified images of photos, magazines and graphics in full lifelike color.

I have been playing with it and only have to figure the focus out more.

Cash Register

Please don't take any bill larger than a $20.
We can't keep up with breaking all the big bills that people bring in and this time of the year they seem to have more $20's anyway. Of course if their bill is $44.95 then then we probably could brake it since they are getting so little change!

If you have an opportunity to look at the flickr site, we had over 100 participants and many are very cute! Sponge Bob won, his mother completely built his costume from scratch with no pattern! It was awesome!

Friday and Saturday Parking Lot

Dear Staff:

The roadway improvements on 151st Street are complete. We are keeping the adjacent shared entry to Woodbine closed at the present time. More on that at a later time.

The library parking lot is due for striping, repair and sealcoating. We have scheduled this to begin Friday afternoon and complete on Saturday, October 20th (subject to weather). The library needs to be closed on both Saturday and Sunday, with no traffic, as per the sealcoating company. This is subject to weather, so if it is raining heavy on Thursday or Friday this plan may be cancelled. Signs are posted to alert patrons.

LOST or DAMAGED ITEMS

We have a policy (procedure) on patrons replacing our books with the exact same edition by ISBN (International Standard Book Number).

BUT, we can't assume that other libraries have the same policy. Before telling someone they can replace a lost or damaged book, make sure it is our item. If it isn't ours we will need to call the owning library to see what their policy is on this.

Refer questions to me.
Jody

OUT OF SYSTEM ITEMS

If an item is from out of system at renewal one would have to override the renewal request.

DON'T override these! They need to go to Adult Services so the owning library can be asked if a renewal is allowed.

Zoo Pass Confusion

When people are asking for more than one pass they probably don't realize that 8 people & 2 cars can go on one of the passes that we have.
If they still want more that one, the rule is one per family.

Internet Approval / Special Circumstances

For patrons who do not have library cards, do not live in Illinois or the United States...

  • An acceptable form of ID must be shown (i.e. drivers license or passport)
  • An Internet Use Application must be filled out. [Approval for Juveniles must parent or guardian's information also.]
  • We will create a file for these and keep them for 6 months.

DISCHARGING ITEMS

aka CHECKING ITEMS IN

Be extra careful!
Just now a book was found on the shelf not checked in (discharged).

The most embarrassing part is that the patron checking out had returned the book yesterday and at the same time a patron (who just took it off the shelf) brought it to the desk at the same time.

One way to avoid this is to watch the discharge screen to make sure the items title comes up when scanned.

Out of System Requests

When an Item is coming from anywhere, we can NOT give a date of arrival or guarantee when it will arrive.

Especially when an Item is coming from Out of Our System. Also do NOT offer to get a status report. The patron will be called when the book arrives or if the book will not be sent, they will we notified.

TELEPHONE MESSAGES

We can always use reminders!

Please remember to check the phone at Circ Desk for Messages that have been left. This morning there were 13 but 1/2 of them were hang ups. So I had 5 people to call back (one was for me and I already talked to the vendor.) It doesn't take long. This is a PR issue and we got a complaint.

If you have trouble with understanding a message, don't erase it and ask someone else to listen.
If you need to know how checking messages works, ASK.

harry potter

http://harrypottersagaend.blogspot.com/

The Harry Potter Contest Entries will be posted at the website above.

REMEMBER...

Noise travels in this library!

Talking at the Circ Desk can clearly be heard back to the Magazines,
over by the new books, at the Card Catalog computers, etc.
At the Circ Desk we can also hear the Help Desk.

Anywhere you are in the library keep your voice low.
EVERYONE (yes, me too) needs to be more mindful of this.

When we get a complaint, I would rather it not be about noise coming from the Library Staff.

HS Summer Reading List Books

Bonnie is placing holds on the books from this list that belong to our Library. (These books are on the far corner of the Reference Desk.)
When the hold comes in for Reference, give to Bonnie. These books are also checked out to Reference because we want our patron's to have them available. When they bring them to the desk to check out they will need to be over rode.

Miss Anna's music class

Hi gang.....Sign up has been slow for some of the classes.....especially the music classes on Wednesdays. I have changed the charge to $25.00 PER FAMILY, not per child......we already picked up a few more kids today. (Saturday) This is a series of 4 classes. So, if they can only make one or two classes, just charge them $5.00 per class. Please sign people up for the 11:00 class first. For example....If they sign up after the class on Wednesday for the three remaining classes, charge them $15.oo.

Thanks, Kitty

Driven to Read on the bookmobile

The Driven to Read summer reading program will begin this coming Monday. For a little added attraction, we will have a jar filled with "pigeon eggs" for patrons to "guess how many". After two weeks the winner with the closest number will win.

Patrons participating in the bookmobile's reading program will be required to register and log their books on the bus. We are encouraging patrons to sign up for both programs if they wish to.

Final prizes include gift certificates to Borders and for those who complete the program, a chance to win an iPod nano.

Bookmobile wins "Best Impression" Prize

Our bookmobile won the "Best Impression" prize at last Friday's Bookmobile Round Up in Wheeling, IL. There were 9 bookmobiles and 62 in attendence at the meeting. Many commented on our graphics wrap, the rear window, and the overall cleanliness and neatness of the vehicle.

Jim and Jody were proud to represent Homer Library and to accept this award. (We received a gift certificate to Michaels!)

File for Life

These red holders and inserts were mentioned in the newspaper.
They also talked about free cell phones, but those are supposed to be available at National City Bank in Lockport and Homer.
I will put a copy of the article in the drawer with the "File for Life" things.

Circulation Desk Clean-up

IF you haven't noticed, things have been moved around at the Circ Desk.
The large drawer that once held the CD's now holds library cards, routing slips and extra rubberbands. There are also some "File for Life" holders and inserts in the drawer.

Community Room

Home Depot is installing the counters in the community room. There is a definite smell throughout the library. Tell patrons sorry for the inconvenience but the community room will be beautiful when finished.

Thanks,
Sara

If this is the only item in system, please give the request to the reference department.

Counting the Number of Items

Previously the system did not prompt us to check how many items should be in a set.
This may have caused some to be lax in checking items.

This will now be a function on our items. Carol W. has done this to the books that have CD's and is starting to work on the "Books on CD."

When available everyone will have an individual override password.

In the mean time KEEP CHECKING the number of items.

House Bill 1727

If you look around the library, you’ll notice that there are posters and bookmarks about House Bill 1727, Mandatory Internet Filters on All Public and School Library Computers. This is a bill that the Illinois State Senate is currently considering.

If this bill is passed, OUR library will have to place filters on our computers!

Currently, our library is NOT filtered. Our library believes that parents are the best means of preventing minors from accessing undesirable content in the library. This is why we have parents fill out a consent form and require parents to sit with youngsters in the computer room.

Please take a minute to look at both the posters AND bookmarks….they contain different information.

The bookmarks discuss why filters don’t work and that they are inflexible.

The posters discuss what may happen in public libraries if this bill is passed…. Notice that point three states “Given the requirements of HB 1727, your library may need to remove all public computers due to…” We are in no way saying this is what our library will do if HB 1727. It is something to consider as some libraries may go this route.

At my previous library, youth computers were filtered. An excellent example to discuss with patrons is the effects this will have on student homework. A project was assigned on trees and bushes. Students were blocked from all sites that contained the word bush!

Comment: School Books that are dropped off here

The following comment came in:

I would look for these books at the school book desk by the youth department. They could stack them by the district school books. The circ desk has too many nooks and crannies.

Any other thoughts? Please email them to me.

Thanks,
Sara

Delivery Bags

The Delivery people would like the Green Books to be in their own bag. It seems the Green Routed books get picked right away and every day.

We have set up 3 bags, one for each color route and if there are only a few Yellow books they could be put in with the Blue books when the delivery person comes.

They appreciate any help we give them because of the volume of items being transported.

Kitty's view on blog

Now that I know how to do this, I'm cool!

BIG YUCK !

The whole fridge needs to be cleaned out AND especially the freezer needs to be defrosted.
To accomplish this, all perishables must be taken home or tossed out by Friday, 5/11/07 at 5:00 p.m.

The management is not responsible for items are left behind and may be tossed.

Vacation Days and Time Off

Just a reminder!

Would everyone write on their time cards the date and hours to be used for vacation and/or sick time. This would be a great help to me when doing payroll. It makes it easier for me to get payroll correct and to keep track of time used.

Space concerns !

And I am not talking about in the building, but on the computer system.

Our server is loaded. If you have documents saved to the Shared drive, go through them and delete anything that is unnecessary or no longer needed.

If you have personal stuff you need to save, buy a flash drive!

After two weeks I may just clear it out myself because that's the way i am.
